A streambed sediment sample collected on 21 September 2004 was tested for toxicity (both survival and growth endpoints reported) using Hyalella azteca and Chironomus tentans.
Hyalella azteca - The sediment sample was found to have a significant effect to both survival and growth of Hyalella azteca. The mean percent survival was 87.5, which represented 90 percent of the control. The mean weight (mg, dry weight) was 0.13, which represented 87% of the control.
Chironomus tentans - The sediment sample was found to have a significant effect on survival of Chironomus tentans. The mean percent survival was 67.5, which represented 73% of the control. The sample did not have a significant effect on the growth of this species. The mean weight (mg, dry weight) was 0.8, which represented 98% of the control. The sediment sample was toxic and violated the narrative toxicity objective.

Water Quality Objective/Criterion:

The water quality objective used was the California Secondary MCL recommended level of 500 mg/L. The Basin Plan includes chemical constituent water quality objectives that include (by reference) secondary maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) protective of MUN (CVRWQCB, 2007a). The secondary MCLs for TDS provide a range of values including a recommended level (500 mg/L), upper level (1000 mg/L) and a short-term level (1500 mg/L). The recommended concentration was used as it is intended to be protective of all drinking water uses. Though individual listing evaluations did not look at the water supply source serving the given geographic area, there are certain areas that receive supply waters (such as the Delta Mendota Canal) that at times may be elevated above the recommended level of the secondary MCL. Where future information is made available to document this to be the case, these water bodies may be re-evaluated in future listing cycles. TDS levels should not exceed 500 mg/L (CVRWQCB, 2007a).
