Representative Monitoring
The Central Valley Dairy Representative Monitoring Program (CVDRMP) is a region-wide groundwater monitoring program approved by the Executive Officer as an alternative to individual groundwater monitoring at all dairies. The CVDRMP installs wells and collects and analyzes samples of first-encountered groundwater at dairies chosen as representative of other, non-monitored, dairies with respect to features such as herd size, soil conditions, depth to groundwater, pond construction, and cropland management practices.
The goals of the CVDRMP are to:
- Examine current groundwater conditions and how they relate to historical operations;
- Identify, as possible, past practices and any recent changes to those practices that contributed to currently observed groundwater quality conditions;
- Generate results that are applicable beyond areas of monitored dairies (to other non-monitored dairies); and ultimately
- Identify practices that are protective of groundwater quality.
There are over 1,100 dairy members of the CVDRMP. Monitoring data are being collected at 42 representative dairies, using 443 monitoring wells.

Dairy Representative Monitoring Program
Report summarizing the results of representative groundwater monitoring from 2012 through 2018, including an evaluation of current dairy management practices and recommendations for improved management practices.
The original Summary Representative Monitoring Report was submitted on 2 April 2019. A revised Summary Representative Monitoring Report was submitted on 19 April 2019 that includes two corrections regarding cost estimates reflected in Table ES3 on page vi, Table 15 on page 72, and the associated narrative on page 71.
