Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) for Drinking Water
Rule, Revisions, and Improvements
The purpose of the federal Lead and Copper Rule (LCR), Revisions (LCRR), and Improvements (LCRI) is to protect public health by reducing lead and copper levels in drinking water. Lead and copper can enter drinking water through disturbance or corrosion of lead and copper plumbing materials. Public water systems are required to monitor and take various actions to minimize lead and copper levels at consumers' taps.
Lead Service Line Inventory Portal
Water systems should designate one person from their system to register for WBKey and submit their Lead Service Line Inventory through the portal:
Announcements
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maintains the October 16, 2024, LCRR compliance date for the lead service line inventories. All community and non-transient non-community water systems must complete and submit an initial inventory, even if all service lines are identified as non-lead.
- Water systems are to keep their current tap sampling plans until the LCRR comes into effect on October 16, 2024.
