Bioaccumulation Monitoring Program Training Series

The SWAMP Bioaccumulation Monitoring Program, in partnership with California Indian Environmental Alliance, offered a tribally-centered Bioaccumulation Monitoring Training Series in 2024.

The purpose of this training series is to support California Native American Tribes in developing programs in the areas of bioaccumulation monitoring, data analysis, and data use processes, and enable Tribes and other bioaccumulation monitoring groups to adopt those processes into their workflows and more easily partner with the Program and the Safe to Eat Workgroup.

The partnership between the Program and the California Indian Environmental Alliance in developing this training series was critical to ensuring the training materials and content were tailored to broad and diverse audiences. Each training in the series was recorded and the pertinent components of each recording and corresponding training materials are provided below so anyone can access and use them in the future.

On June 5, 2024, SWAMP and OEHHA staff gave a presentation on the Training Series to the CalEPA Tribal Advisory Committee. See presentation slides for more details.

Sep. 17, 2024	Bioaccumulation monitoring data QAQC & Tribal data use in the California Integrated Report This course will cover essential quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures to consider for bioaccumulation sampling and analysis, and how Tribal data are used in the California Integrated Report process. Dec. 2, 2024	Bioaccumulation monitoring data analysis & interpretation This course will cover the essentials on how to pull bioaccumulation monitoring data from the California Environmental Data Exchange Network (CEDEN) database and the SWAMP Data Dashboard, as well as how to analyze and interpret it appropriately. Dec 10, 2024	OEHHA fish consumption advisory development This course is intended to act as a brief introduction to how the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) develops fish consumption advisories.	Slides Recording

• Live attendance of the training series was only open to California Tribal Environmental Departments (or equivalent Tribal programs).
• All courses were held virtually over Zoom, and instruction were recorded for posting online.
• All courses were free to attend.
• Each course was less than 3 hours in length.
• Registration for each course remained open until after the end of the course.
• Course announcements and updates were shared via the California Water Board’s Tribal Matters and Safe to Eat Workgroup email lists.
